ZLD ‘Sets Standard’ for Industrial Water Conservation

In drought-stricken California, zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems are setting the standard for industrial-scale water conservation, reports Water World.

In an article for the publication, Peter S. Cartwright, president of PE Cartwright Consulting, reports a large California power generator is using membrane technologies to treat and reuse cooling tower blowdown in a ZLD process.

The process consists of chemical addition to the blowdown water, which result in hardness and silica precipitation, and uses microfiltration technology to continuously remove the precipitated solids.

This technology allows a very high percentage of the treated water to be completely reused.

Last year Consol Energy said its newest facility — based on ZLD technology — can treat a maximum flow of 3,500 gallons per minute of mine water with no liquid or solid waste from the water treatment operations leaving the property.
