Covanta to Break Ground on $45M Next-Gen Recycling Center

CovantaCovanta will this year break ground on a $45 million state-of-the-art automated materials recovery facility in Indianapolis that it says is modeled after the most modern recycling facilities in the world.

The Advanced Recycling Center, planned to open in 2016, will be located adjacent to Covanta’s Energy-from-Waste facility. Together, the facilities will create a first-of-its-kind, next-generation system for sustainably managing waste in North America, the company says.

The recycling facility will recover recyclables from mixed waste that will be sold to manufacturing customers throughout the Midwest. The company expects the project will increase recycling by five times the current rate and recover up to 80 percent to 90 percent of resources such as recyclable paper, cardboard, plastics and metals, at no cost to the city or its residents.

The system complements Covanta’s existing Energy-from-Waste facility by sharing trucks and maintaining current traffic flow and avoiding additional vehicle emissions and burdens on road infrastructure.

Covanta has partnered with RecycleForce, a provider of recycling services for residents and corporate clients, to staff operations at the Advanced Recycling Center.

RecycleForce provides electronics recycling along with social services to help formerly incarcerated individuals find employment through transitional jobs and workforce training.

Employees hired through RecycleForce are expected to fulfill quality control functions after materials pass through the Advanced Recycling Center.

Late last year Covanta assumed operations of the Pinellas County Resource Recovery Facility located in St. Petersburg, Florida. In addition to operations, Covanta also commenced a number of capital projects to improve operations of the waste-to-energy facility.
