Mercedes Fuel DuelJoules ethanol fuel has been confirmed by third-party tests to meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D4806 and the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) EN 15376. Joule will use the results to obtain the government approvals needed for commercialization of its ethanol fuel. The tests were initiated by AUDI, Joule’s partner in the automotive space.

Ninety Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks competed in the “Fuel Duel” fuel-consumption comparison in which the Actros (pictured) takes on the jobs of a competitor vehicle in a fleet and handles its loads and routes for two weeks. Tractor units of models 1842 LS and 1845 LS with Euro VI emission control technology took part in the competition.

Boeing and CFM International initiated flight-testing of the LEAP-1B engine on April 29 on a modified 747 flying testbed. The testing is part of a two-year program that will culminate in engine certification in 2016 and delivery of the first Boeing 737 MAX in 2017. The LEAP-1B is a product of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (Safran) and General Electric.

Toyota and Mazda are in talks to expand their technology partnership to fuel-cell vehicles, Reuters reports. As a part of the partnership, Toyota would provide fuel-cell and plug-in-hybrid technology to Mazda, and in return, Mazda would provide Toyota with fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engine technology under its proprietary SkyActiv series.

Penske Truck Leasing has received a $400,000 grant from the DOE for the company’s Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Demonstration and Enhanced Driver Experience Project. Penske will use the funds to further introduce alternative fuel vehicles to its customer base.
