The global smart water meter market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 14 percent by 2019, led by key players Badger Meter, Elster Group, Itron and Sensus, according to an RnRMarketResearch report.

Global Smart Water Meter Market 2015-2019 covers the market landscape and its growth prospects in the coming years. Previously, AMR technology was used by water utilities to collect data remotely from water meters via wireless communication systems. This communication system was one-way in nature.

However, advances in smart water meters, coupled with the emergence of AMI-enabled communication, which enables two-way feedback, is encouraging more vendors to adopt the technology. Such two-way communication allows for the real-time monitoring and control of water consumption. AMIs also encompass a wide range of metering devices, software processes, communication media, and data-management systems. As a result, around the world, many AMR meters are now being replaced by AMI-compatible smart water meters.

According to the report, many countries worldwide are facing water scarcity because of an increase in water loss as a result of leakages or the illegal tapping of water pipelines. For instance, the aging water storage infrastructure in the US has resulted in leakages that lead to water wastage. Around 7 billion gallons of water are wasted annually in the US because of water main leakages.

A Frost & Sullivan report published last week found the global water and wastewater networks market earned revenues of $89.86 billion in 2014 and is estimates to reach $156.04 billion in 2020.
