Washington, DC Tops Green Roof Rankings

NA Green RoofsA 4,000-square-foot living roof atop a new apartment complex in Washington, DC, is almost complete, reports FMLink.

The green roof is part of The Colonel apartment complex in the Shaw neighborhood. Riverbend Nursery and MSM Roofing developed the green roof, which includes a blend of drought-tolerant succulents. Facility owners and developers in Washington, DC, can earn credit toward on-site stormwater management and green space requirements by installing vegetative roofs.

In addition to slowing stormwater runoff, green roofs can result in lower operating costs for buildings.

In related news, Washington, DC ranks no. 1 for most green roofs installed in 2014, according to Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ annual Green Roof Industry Survey. The city of Toronto takes the no. 2 spot.

The Washington DC metropolitan region saw the installation of 1,207,115 square feet of green roofs in 2014. Washington has adopted public policies and programs that support green roof investment, including rebates of $7-$15 per square foot per green roof installed and credits that reduce stormwater fees.

For the first time ever, Toronto has ranked second amongst North American cities, with 775,216 square feet of green roofs installed. The Toronto Green Roof by-law of 2009 requiring green roofs on most new buildings has resulted in the permitting of more than 2 million square feet of green roofs.

In the survey, GRHC also saw a 12 percent reduction in growth rate for green roofs in 2014. This is largely due to the end of federal stimulus funding, and limitation in data collection.
