HP Achieves 17% Drop in GHG Emissions
HP operations achieved a 17.3 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in 2014 compared to its 2010 baseline, according to its 2014 Living Progress Report. In 2014, HPâ€™s operations produced 1,667,700 metric tons of CO2e emissions, a 5.5 percent decrease from the 1,765,100 metric tons of CO2e produced in 2013.
Emissions reductions were largely achieved through data center consolidation and energy efficiency initiatives. HP also increased its on-site renewable energy-generating capacity by 150 percent during 2014 and reduced emissions from business travel.
Energy use accounted for 91 percent of HPâ€™s GHG emissions from operations in 2014. The remaining 9 percent was associated with the companyâ€™s transportation fleet, refrigeration equipment and semiconductor-development processes.
In 2014, HP generated approximately 69,700 metric tons of waste compared toÂ 78,700 metric tons in 2013, an 11.5 percent reduction. The vast majority â€” almost 91 percent â€” was nonhazardous solid waste. HP reused, recycled or incinerated about 55,600 metric tons of nonhazardous waste, achieving a landfill-diversion rate of 88 percent, up from 87 percent in 2013. In all, 50 HP sites around the world diverted 100 percent of their waste from landfills during 2014. Just over 31 percent of the nonhazardous waste HP generated in 2014 was paper.
While only 7 percent of water use across HPâ€™s value chain is related to its operations, in 2014 the company developed a goal to reduce freshwater consumption by 20 percent per employee at its office sites by 2020, compared to 2010.
In 2014, HP consumed 7,431,000 cubic meters of water worldwide, predominantly for use in buildings, cooling and landscape irrigation. This figure represents a 3 percent decrease from 2013.
HP is the first global information technology company to set GHG emissions reductions goals for all three parts of its value chain â€” supply chain, operations, and products and solutions. The company aims to reduce CO2e emissions related to its supply chain and operations by 20 percent by 2020 compared to 2010 levels. Within the same timeframe, itÂ plans to reduce GHG emissions related to its products and solutions by 40 percent.
