MillerCoors graphicMillerCoors announced that its Milwaukee-based brewery and corporate offices are landfill-free.

To reach the goal, MillerCoors eliminated 65 tons of waste that was previously sent to the landfill each month. This is the first brewery-office campus within MillerCoors to achieve landfill-free operations. The Milwaukee brewery is the seventh of the company’s eight major breweries to reach this target, the company says.

The Milwaukee brewery reduced waste 19 percent over the last year to about 15 tons of waste generated each month. That residual waste, which cannot be recycled or reused, is set to a waste-to-energy facility in La Crosse, Wis.

MillerCoors has reduced waste sent to landfills by more than 448 tons across its entire operations in 2014. The company has a goal of achieving landfill-free status at all of its major manufacturing facilities by 2020.

The company’s Trenton brewery in Ohio was the first MillerCoors facility to achieve landfill-free status in 2010. By 2013, the company’s Golden brewery as well as its breweries in
Shenandoah, Va.; Irwindale, Calif.; and Eden, NC had also achieved landfill-free status.

In May, the MillerCoors Trenton Brewery partnered with biotechnology company Nutrinsic to convert wastewater from the beer-making process into fish and animal feed.
