Sprint to Use Paper Made From Wheat Straw Waste

sprint logoSprint will test a new kind of paper made from 80 percent wheat-straw waste for its customer mailings as a sustainable paper alternative.

The company says its the first to use wheat-straw paper for mailed customer correspondence in the US. The wheat-straw based paper will come from Prairie Paper Co., which was co-founded by actor Woody Harrelson in 1988.

Sprint has cut the total weight of printing paper it has purchased each year by 83 percent since 2007. The company met this goal by reducing the weight and volume of its mailed correspondence and by communicating with customers online. Sprint began using a two-in-one reuseable envelope in 2012, a strategy that has saved the company more than $500,000 annually in paper costs.

Sprint was awarded the “most eco-focused wireless carrier” award last year by Compass Intelligence. Sprint has carried out more green initiatives than any competing mobile operator in the US, according to Frost & Sullivan, which in 2013 awarded the company its North American Award for Green Excellence.
