AkzoNobel Coating Improves KLM Aircraft’s Efficiency
An AkzoNobel coating, used on KLM’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, offers potential weight reduction, which helps lower fuel costs, and uses less paint, which means the aircraft can fly more efficiently than comparable aircraft.
KLM chose AkzoNobel to supply its aerospace coating to the aircraft. The basecoat/clearcoat system also produces a smoother surface, which makes the airplane easier to clean.
According to KLM, the finish required 15 percent less paint than previously used systems and, together with other improvements, it means the aircraft can fly further, faster, cleaner, quieter and more efficiently than comparable aircraft.
AkzoNobel says the coating has a number of additional benefits, including UV protection for colors — extending the time required between repainting — and reduced drying times. This means less time in the paint shop and a cost saving for the airline.
In addition, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is around 20 percent more fuel efficient, contributing to KLM’s climate action plan, which aims for a further 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020.
Last week the United Nation’s aviation body proposed the first-ever global emissions standard for commercial aircraft.
