$7.4M Carbon Capture Project Will Lower Pulp Mill Emissions, Boost Greenhouse Yield

CO2 SolutionsA circular-economy initiative will soon capture carbon emissions from a Canadian pulp mill and then use the CO2 to spur plant growth in a nearby greenhouse.

CO2 Solutions will install a $7.4 million carbon capture system at Quebec forestry company Resolute Forest Products’ Saint-Félicien softwood kraft pulp mill. The captured CO2 — up to 30 metric tons per day — will then be reused in Serres Toundra’s $100 million vegetable greenhouse, currently under construction in Saint-Félicien. Adding carbon to the facility’s air will help fuel photosynthesis and boost the greenhouse’s yield.

After a six-month demonstration period, Serres Toundra has agreed to purchase the captured CO2 for a period of 10 years.

CO2 Solutions says it expects to realize revenues of about $400,000 annually from the sale of captured CO2 and associated carbon credits.

“We are very proud to achieve the significant milestone of a first commercial agreement for the use of our technology alongside first-class partners,” said CO2 Solutions CEO Evan Price in a statement. “This will enable us to demonstrate the breakthrough combination of our enzymatic carbon capture process in low cost, small footprint RPB (high-intensity gas-liquid rotating packed bed mass transfer technology) equipment.”

CO2 Solutions expects to complete the CO2 capture unit by the end of 2017 and realize first revenues from the project in 2018.

Earlier this year CO2 Solutions and Mojonnier Limited teamed up to capture carbon from the beverage bottling processes — thus preventing CO2 emissions — and then supply this CO2 back to the beverage industry for its carbonation needs.
