Sustainable Product Development Tool Now Offered for Free
The Catalyst Program helps product developers, designers and manufacturers better understand and implement the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Program, which provides a roadmap towards developing responsible, sustainable products based on five characteristics: material health, material reuse, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness.
The core of the Catalyst program is a 2.5-hour self-paced online course. It provides the context for Cradle to Cradle Certified product development, along with an overview of the product standard and resources.
Participants who complete the course receive access to resources for implementing Cradle to Cradle design within their organization, and potentially pursuing Cradle to Cradle Certification. They also become part of an online community that includes a dedicated forum for exchanging ideas, asking questions and sharing best practices, and participating in a variety of peer-to-peer learning opportunities.
In an earlier interview, Lewis Perkins of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute said the Cradle to Cradle design methodology helps companies make the shift away from seeing waste as trash while also lessening their dependency on virgin materials.
“Utilizing the framework laid out by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, we have a continuous improvement map for safe materials to be perpetually cycled into one of the two nutrient cycles: technical or biological,” Perkins said. “By adopting a Cradle to Cradle framework for product design and material collection/re-utilization will mitigate the risk and allow for continued growth of resources, revenues and products.”
