CSUN Installs 1-Megawatt Fuel-Cell Power Plant

California State University at Northridge has received a $2.2 million incentive check from Southern California Gas Co. for what it says is the installation of the single largest fuel-cell power plant at any university campus in the world.

The $5.8 million, 1-megawatt plant was purchased last year from FuelCell Energy, Inc. In addition to the $2.2 million incentive, The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power committed $500,000. The fuel cell generates enough electricity to power 800 homes.

Cal State Northridge qualified for the award by participating in the Self-Generation Incentive Program, a state-sponsored program that provides financial incentives to government and businesses for generating their own electricity on-site.
