WARW-FM in Washington, D.C., is becoming the first “green” radio station in the U.S. It is also changing its format, expanding to include current rock in addition to the classic rock.
The change to an environmentally responsible approach, along with the format change, also precipitated a name change, to 94.7 The Globe, writes Mediaweek (via Mediabuyerplanner.com).
The CBS station took a hit in ratings last year when Clear Channel’s traditional Oldies station became a Classic Hits station, dropping from a 2.2 overall rating share to a 1.5 in the recent Fall survey.
The station will operate using renewable energy to power its 50,000 watt signal. It will also purchase wind energy, while station vehicles will be replaced with hybrid models. It will promote, both on-air and off, ways for listeners to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.
The station’s new website includes 12 steps to reach the mission of “becoming part of the solution.” No. 10 states, “We won’t insult your intelligence. The Globe will have commercials (got bills of our own to pay) but we will try to keep them to a minimum and present them in a way that respects our listeners and our advertisers.”
