Northern Trust Saves Energy with VFDs

A project Honeywell completed at Northern Trust’s Chicago headquarters that involved installing more than 40 varibale frequency drives onto air-handling motors in the building is saving Northern Trust approximately $10,000 in energy costs each month during the summer cooling season, according to Honeywell.

“On a hot summer day, our air-conditioning units typically operate at approximately 750 amps,” said Ray Bixman, chief engineer at Northern Trust. “The highest the units should go is 800 amps, so we were getting close to the threshold. With the VFDs in place, the units run around 500 amps, which cuts our energy usage by more than 30 percent.”
