U.S. Concrete says it’s implementing environmental technologies that will reduce potential carbon dioxide emissions by hundreds of thousands of tons annually.

The company says it’s substantially replacing traditional Portland cement, which accounts for six to eight percent of human generated CO2 in the environment, with reclaimed fly ash and/or slag (left over material from coal-fired industrial plants or iron mills), which it claims is an “environmentally superior and sustainable alternative” to traditional Portland cement concrete. This use has resulted in a reduction of 328,000 tons of potential CO2 emissions in its operations during 2006.

The company is calling this EF (for Environmentally-Friendly) Technology. The company says that EF Technology product attributes qualifies it for LEED credits.
