Environmental policies reflect the aims of an organization and a plan of how the organization is going to achieve the aims. Unfortunately, many policies are thrown together from pre-existing examples and templates, and are unrealistic as to what the company could actually achieve, Amy Sims writes in BusinessGreen Blog.
Four points from Sims to keep in mind:
- All policies should be regularly reviewed and updated – at least every six months.
- Keep it brief – short enough that your internal and external audience can read it and come away feeling they understand where the company is and where it’s headed.
- Ideally the statement should be realistic and achievable and demonstrate a commitment to making the policy work. To ensure this, get the environmental record signed, dated and endorsed by senior management.
- The business needs to be educated on environmental issues, either through meeting with consultants, participating in workshops or researching policies of other companies in their sector.
