Wal-Mart Selling Private Label CFLs

Wal-Mart is selling private label compact fluorescent light bulbs under its Great Value brand label.

“The introduction of our Great Value bulbs make CFLs a more accessible option for our shoppers as we strive to sell 100 million CFLs by the end of 2007,” said Wal-Mart Senior Vice President and General Merchandise Manager Andy Barron. “We are making great progress on our goal and know that in reaching this milestone we can help our customers save $3 billion in electrical costs over the life of the bulbs and prevent 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gases from entering our atmosphere.”

Wal-Mart announced mercury cuts on its CFLs back in May. Philips Lighting Co., for example, said that the CFLs it sold to Wal-Mart Stores had 40 percent to 60 percent less mercury than the 5-milligram industry average because of its unique pill-shape capsule, The Record reports.

Wal-Mart says that people can buy four of its CFLs for the cost of three regularly priced brand name CFLs. Wal-Mart’s CFLs carry the EnergyStar seal of approval -? signifying their high quality and soft light color -? and are RoHS compliant.
