NBC Poised To Announce Sweeping Environmental Initiative

NBC is poised to announce a wider sweeping environmental initiative next week that Bravo president Lauren Zalaznick, who chairs the NBCU Green Council, says will include every part of the company, Hollywood Reporter writes. NBC Universal already launched a large initiative in May. “Get On Board,” a program to reduce greenhouse gases and raise awareness, was announced as part of General Electric’s (NBCU’s parent) ecomagination initiative.

NBC’s green work will kick off on November 5 with simultaneous live broadcasts from the North and South poles and the equator on “Today.” It’s the vanguard of another initiative, “Green Is Universal,” a week long programming effort to educate TV viewers and Web and wireless users on ecological issues.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” said “Today” executive producer Jim Bell, speaking about the November 5 show. Meredith Vieira will anchor what they’re calling the “Ends of the Earth” series from New York. Bell said that the technology has yet to be tried and will require “a little guesswork, a little prayer.” It isn’t clear whether NBC’s effort will be carbon neutral.
