Wal-Mart To Sell Reusable Shopping Bags

Wal-Mart plans to unveil its first recyclable cloth shopping bag this weekend, The Chicago Tribune reports. The black bags slogan reads: “Paper or Plastic? Neither.” They cost $1 each.

Other retailers have been offering similar products to cut down on the number of plastic bags that end up in landfills. Ikea, for example, recently began charging consumers extra if chose plastic and began steering them towards purchasing its reusable “Big Blue Bag.”

Yesterday, TreeHugger had a roundup of recent plastic bag news.

  1. Walmart, Walmart. Always the follower. Yet they will come out with some newswire nonsense suggesting that they are leading the way.
    We are not fooled.

  2. I was very pleased to find the reusable bags at Walmart. It would be helpful if the cashiers were instructed on how to use them. For the last 3 weeks I have gotten cashiers who look totally perplexed as to how they should load these bags. Karen 11/19/07

  3. I get the whole environmentally friendly thing and I’m glad Wal Mart is stepping up. Did anyone else notice that these things are made in China? They’re probably made by sweat shop kids. And the $1 per bag surely can’t be paying these people what they deserve.

  4. I am a Wal-Mart employee and have recently discovered what I believe to be the easiest way to pack the reusable bags. You can pass this along or simply try it yourself…take one handle of the bag and twist it three or four times to make a loop, this way it will stay on the turnstile while the bag is expanded. It takes some prep time in the beginning of the purchase, but I guarantee it is a smoother process than fumbling with a cumbersome task.

  5. All the re-usable shopping bags I have seen are Made in China! You think stores could at lease offer some items actually made in the USA. Any way I ordered 100 beutiful recycled cotton shopping bags for all my family and friends at a great price from enviro-tote.com the are 100% made in the USA. You have to look but you can find things still made in the USA. Please pay attention start today!
