A year after Wilmette, a suburb of Chicago, rolled out discounts for environmentally friendly cars, the village is leaning towards a flat rate for vehicle stickers, The Chicago Tribune reports.

If approved, the plan would recalculate rates after the village increased fees for cars and trucks by 50 percent but gave a break to greener vehicles The revised fees would charge residents $90 for trucks and $75 for cars, mini-vans and sport-utility vehicles regardless of their green ratings.

The discount came at the expense of carpoolers and commuters, critics said. The discount also did little to change car buying decisions. Just 509 cars of the 18,908 vehicles registered in Wilmette posted EPA ratings high enough to merit the discount, according to the article.
