Christmas Tree Growers Introduce Green Standards

Christmas tree growers, members of the Coalition of Environmentally Conscious Growers in Oregon, have created a set of standards that will identify trees grown under certain environmental conditions, AP reports.

This is the first year the program will be seen in the market. More than 200,000 tags will hang on trees, indicating the trees were farmed by the coalition’s standards. The group hopes to take the tag system nationwide.

To use the tag, a farm must meet certain standards for managing wetlands, nutrients and pests. More than a dozen tree growers are on a waiting list to be inspected.
