BofA Branch Goes Platinum

Bank of America recently opened a banking center designed to achieve “Platinum” certification from the U.S. Green Building’s LEED program. Located in Adelanto, the building features a solar-paneled roof, insulation made from recycled blue jeans, and counters made from compressed wheat.  “We believe this will be the future of banking centers,” said Raquel Gonzalez, regional executive for the company’s Community West program.Last March, Bank of America made a $20 billion environmental commitment, $1.4 billion of it earmarked for all new offices and banking centers to achieve LEED certification.  The Bank of American Tower at Bryant Park in Manhattan is scheduled to be finished in 2008 and also achieve Platinum certification, as is a second center scheduled to open later this year in Los Angeles.

The banking center in Adelanto was designed by Gensler and opened its doors to customers on December 12.

In the past year, many large banking firms have rolled out green initiatives.  Ceres recently ranked banks on their commitment to green.
