British Airways Reprimanded Over Emissions Claims

British Airways has been reprimanded for making false claims about the environmental impact of the expansion of a third runway at Heathrow Airport. Willie Walsh, the company’s chief executive, reportedly wrote e-mails to tens of thousands of customers, asking them to support the construction of the new runway at Heathrow, claiming the expansion would greatly reduce CO2 emissions. His e-mail implied that the claim about CO2 reduction had been endorsed by the Government. But according to the Department for Transport’s consultation document, the new runway would raise overall CO2 emissions by 2.6 million tonnes a year by allowing an extra 220,000 flights.

The Advertising Standards Authority has written BA, ordering it to withdraw its claim and to confirm that it will not be repeated

This is not the first time British Airways has run into trouble regarding its policies towards carbon emissions.
