government_building_2.jpgTwo new reports, one focusing on data centers, the other on PCs and related gear, find that the federal government could save $1 billion in energy costs over the next five years by greening up their data centers. The reports were underwritten by HP and Intel.

HP and Intel estimate that the annual cost to power federal data centers is nearly $480 million. The data center study, titled “Go Green Power Play,” estimates the government could save $192 million annually by deploying green technologies while the other report, “Go Green PC Power,” estimates $82.4 million annually could be saved with more energy-efficient PCs.

The report says that annual savings would be the equivalent of conserving 1.3 billion barrels of oil, and over four years would equal the cost of 28,537 Americans with Social Security benefits for a year.
