IBM Unveils Green Retail Store Technologies And Services

IBM unveiled a portfolio of green retail store technologies and services to help retailers improve energy efficiency in their IT operations.  The centerpiece of the portfolio is the IBM SurePOS 700, a selling point-of-sale system that, according to IBM, reduces power consumption by 36 percent or more.  According to this article, that could save a large retail client approximately $1 million dollars over the average seven-year cycle of a new machine.Another key feature of the portfolio is the IBM BladeCenter S, which can allow retailers to reduce energy costs by 20 percent and back office noise by 50 percent, according to IBM.  Clients can also run the system desk-side, which frees up more space.  In addition, through 3-D modeling and thermal analysis, IBM can analyze the energy systems in data centers and help clients move towards hybrid systems that reduce consumption.

The IBM SurePos 700 will cost between $1,900 and $3,500; the BladeCenterS starts at $2,599.
