DHL Program Lets Customers Offset Shipping Emissions

dhl_singapore.jpgDHL has launched a carbon neutral shipping service, DHL GoGreen Express, in the Asia Pacific region.

DHL says the program is part of the company’s GoGreen range of carbon-neutral and low-carbon shipping options that are available in Europe and were launched in January 2007. In Asia Pacific, the service will be available in 17 countries across the region over the course of this year.

To ship carbon neutral, customers will pay a three percent ‘green premium’ on top of standard delivery charges. DHL says the money will go to certified carbon management programs such as alternative fuel vehicle technology, solar panels and reforestation projects.

Customers will receive an annual certificate from DHL stating the total amount of CO2 which was offset on their behalf during the year. The Swiss-based Societe Generale de Surveillance will verify the program.

Last year, DHL introduced a reusable envelope for customers that ship and return legal-size documents.

DHL has done well in recent research that has graded shippers on environmental performance and sustainability. reporting.
