Sony Gets Green Love From Greenpeace Electronics Survey

greenpeace_report.jpgThe Sony Vaio TZ11 notebook, the Sony Ericsson T650i mobile phone and the Sony Ericsson P1i PDA come out on top in Greenpeace’s “Searching for Greener Electronics” survey (PDF), released at CeBIT.

But, Greenpeace is quick to state that “the race for a green electronic product has not been won yet, each of these products scored just over half of the possible 100 points available to win.”

Fourteen major electronics brands agreed to provide information for the survey, submitting information on their most environmentally friendly products – desktops, notebooks, mobile phones and PDAs. Thirty seven products were awarded points against green design criteria including: the substitution of hazardous chemical substances, energy efficiency and ‘recyclability’.

Some of those contacted, including Acer, Apple, Asus, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sharp, did not respond, or replied too late, PC World reports. It’s not a big surprise that Nintendo wasn’t involved. Greenpeace hammered the company in the November edition of its quarterly Guide to Greener Electronics which focused on game consoles.  As with this report, Sony Ericsson was a leader in the November rankings.

Sony-Ericsson’s T650i phone, with 5.30 out of 10, was the highest-scoring device. In the laptop category, the Sony Vaio TZ11 led with 5.29 points out of 10. Front runners among desktop PCs were the Dell Optiplex 755 and the Hewlett-Packard dc5750, with 4.71 points each.

“Since undertaking the survey we have already witnessed the arrival of greener products in the market, such as the Apple’s new laptop, the MacBook Air, and Nokia’s new phone, the Evolve” said Yannick Vicaire Greenpeace International Toxics Campaigner. “Manufacturers still have a long way to go, but more and more are now taking the environmental impacts of their products seriously.”
