April Third Studios has offset the entire carbon footprint of its new DVD, Elusion.
Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree label appears on the cover of the DVD, indicating that the product’s entire carbon footprint will be offset through the support of greenhouse gas reduction projects, according to the companies.
The carbon footprint was determined by assessing the carbon emissions related to the filming, production and manufacturing of the DVD.
“We chose to offset the carbon footprint from the production of the film and the manufacturing of all the associated DVDs and CDs because there were carbon emissions we simply couldn’t avoid,” said Tex Thayer, co-owner and artistic director of April Third Studios. “From the environmental policies of the plant that manufactures the discs, to the emissions of the vehicles used during the shooting of the film, we did our best to make the right decisions to minimize our impact.”
Last month, Lionsgate announced plans to package many of the company’s DVDs in “environmentally friendly” materials.
Late last year, First Look Studios began a tree planting program to offset the emissions generated from the manufacture of one million DVD packages.
Universal Studios tested green DVD packaging with the Canadian release of Evan Almighty in a thin, cardboard sleeve.
The Versus cable TV network and Brooklyn Brothers ad agency produced carbon-neutral TV commercials.
