Orly Airport in France is digging two one-mile deep shafts to tap into underground hot water geysers, AHN reports. The budget for the geothermal project is $18 million.
The 165-degree water will run through the airport’s heating system and get pumped back into the ground at a temperature of 113 degrees.
Last year, a report from MIT found that mining the huge amounts of heat that reside as stored thermal energy in the Earth’s hard rock crust could supply a substantial portion of the electricity the U.S.
