Sony Pictures Entertainment has become the first customer of data center operator 365 Main to sign up for a new reusable energy program through the Salt River Project’s Earthwise Energy program, InformationWeek reports.
Compared with its electricity bill in California, Sony Pictures will see energy savings using the program, despite the five percent to fifteen percent cost premium on reusable energy sources, said Miles Kelly, 365 Main’s VP of marketing and strategy. “We hope this becomes a standard,” he said.
In addition to signing up to use sun, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, and trash-to-energy through the Earthwise Energy Program, Sony Pictures, a subsidiary of Sony Corp. of America, also has deployed more energy-efficient IT equipment and is evaluating server consolidation and virtualization.
In September, Sony Pictures Entertainment broke ground on a 125,000-square-foot building in Culver City, Calif., which will be the new home for Sony Pictures Television.
