BP has announced in its “BP Sustainability Report 2007” that its GHG emissions, discharges and wastes have decreased compared to 2006, and to a level 24 percent lower than the 83.4 million tons of CO2 emissions the company reported in 2003.
The company reduced its real sustainable GHG emissions by more than 7 million tons since 2001. Total non-GHG emissions to air also decreased, partly due to the installation of automated well controls in the U.S., according to the report. BP also decreased its hazardous wastes compared to 2006 when elevated levels resulted from a terminal demolition.
Total fresh water withdrawal increased, primarily due to cooling systems refilling during the start-up of a BP refinery in Texas City, while total discharges to water decreased with reductions of drilling waste discharged to the Gulf of Mexico.
In 2008, BP plans to invest $1.5 billion in alternative and renewable energy technologies and aims to have built 1,000MW of gross installed wind capacity by the end of 2008.
This past March, BP was ranked the ninth company with the most green credentials, according to a survey of 1,000 UK marketing pros from Marketing Week and Yougov.
BP says that 44 of of its 45 major operating sites meet the requirements of the international environmental management standard ISO 14001.
