Mars Snackfood Unwraps Landfill Gas Project

mars_snacks.jpgMembers of Waco-based Mars Snackfood and representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency unwrapped the candy company’s first landfill gas project that will cut the company’s energy costs and reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions.

One of 21 Texas projects participating in the EPA’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP), and 34 in the EPA’s five-state Region 6, the Mars project will save the company $600,000 a year in energy costs and reduce its annual GHG emissions by more than 10,000 metric tons.

The project will use methane gas from the city landfill to power two furnaces that create steam for the plant’s candy-making operations.
