NEC Develops Energy-Saving Server

nec_ecocenter.jpgNEC is marketing a new server dubbed Eco Center. The company says it consumes up to 55 percent less power, takes up 50 percent less space and is approximately 58 percent lighter than conventional servers.

NEC says that other green attributes include high efficiency batteries and low-power CPUs, chipsets and memory. The new server will hit markets in the U.S., Europe and Asia by September.

The move is one of several toward carbon neutrality among tech manufacturers. Dell said it would set an efficiency target for its server line and IBM has announced software to measure power use of key datacenter elements and allows IT managers to control and set caps on their energy use for servers.
