The Nissan Motor Company has announced plans to sell an electric car in the U.S. and Japan by 2010, the New York Times reports.
Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Goshn said the company expects to sell a broad range of electric vehicles globally by 2012, beginning with a small number, in the hundreds of vehicles, in the U.S.
Mitsubishi is also testing an electric car, and General Motors and Toyota are working on battery-powered vehicles with small engines for recharging. GM plans to start producing the Chevrolet Volt in 2010, while Toyota expects to offer a similar, so-called “plug-in” hybrid around the same time.
Renault has also promises “a range of electric vehicles” beginning with a sedan for the Israel market, before bringing an EV to America within two years, Wired reports.
Tesla, of course, unveiled an electric sports car in 2006.
