A project of FirmGreen will clean raw landfill gas and produce compressed natural gas for use in fleet vehicles owned by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and other area fleets, the company has announced.
When complete, the first phase will produce approximately 30,000 Gasoline Gallon Equivalents (GGE) per day of gCNG, FirmGreen’s brand name for compressed natural gas from renewable resources, the company says. With the exception of hydrogen itself, vehicles fueled with natural gas produce 93 to 95 percent fewer emissions than similar petroleum fueled vehicles, according to the company’s website.
SWACO’s fleets can achieve a net savings of $60,000 per day, the company estimates, based on the recent $4.75-per-gallon-cost of diesel fuel in Ohio and the company’s GGE cost of less than $2.75 per gallon.
FirmGreen says it hopes the project will serve as a model for landfill operators who now flare the waste gases.
