GreenChill Puts Freeze On Supermarket Emissions

supermarket_refrigeration.jpgThe EPA’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, which works with the supermarket industry, says it has prevented emissions of 2.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, equal to the annual emissions of almost 500,000 cars. The partners’ savings in operating costs equal almost $13 million.

To chart future progress, GreenChill’s supermarket partners have created baseline measurements of corporate-wide refrigerant emissions in 2007 and developed Refrigeration Management Plans to reduce those emissions in 2008.

If every supermarket in the nation joined GreenChill and reduced their emissions to the current GreenChill average, the EPA says the industry could prevent the release of 13 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent and 157 ozone-depleting potential tons annually.
