UK Floats Idea Of Carbon Allowance For Individuals

gas_ration.jpgThe chair of the UK’s Environmental Audit Committee, Tim Yeo, says a personal carbon allowance is the best way to cut CO2 without hurting the poor, Treehugger reports.

If individuals go over their allowance they would have to buy credits from somebody else.

“We found that personal carbon trading has real potential to engage the population in the fight against climate change and to achieve significant emissions reductions in a progressive way,” he said. “The idea is a radical one. As such it inevitably faces some significant challenges in its development. It is important to meet these challenges.”

During the 1973 energy crisis in the U.S., gas ration stamps were printed, but never used.

  1. Nice in theory, but by coming from this nation’s politicians, rather unlikely to get off the ground (sorry, I should say ‘avoid sinking without trace’) here for a wee while, especially in light of previous expertise shown in managing such matters in the name of green. Anything that involves box-tickers from government, and especially traders from the City, to oversee and profit from, is a tad tainted, sadly.
