BP Alternative Energy has bought Whiting Clean Energy, a 525 MW natural-gas fired combined-cycle cogeneration power plant in Whiting, Indiana, for $210 million from NiSource, BP announced. Power from the alternative energy plant will provide steam to run BP’s Whiting refinery.
The acquisition lets BP sell lower-carbon power on the power market there and enhance the efficiency of the Whiting refinery.
Other companies use cogeneration plants to improve their efficiency. SC Johnson powers its largest global manufacturing plant with cogeneration turbines that run on natural gas and waste methane from a public landfill.
