eBay Launches Green Marketplace

ebay_worldofgood.jpgeBay unveiled plans for a new e-commerce site for shoppers of environmentally friendly and fair-trade goods. The new site is built in partnership with fair-trade company World of Good, and offers shoppers more information about products—where they come from, how they are made, and how they affect the environment, CNET News reports.

The move is eBay’s attempt to capture a piece of the estimated $206 billion annual business in fair-trade and eco-friendly products in the U.S.

The new site will not follow eBay’s traditional auction model, instead selling products at fixed prices. There will be about 20,000 listings to begin with, spanning more than 70 countries from about 25 eBay partners. All product makers are required to have some sort of certification before they can apply to sell products on the site.

eBay auctioned off the ozone hole in May to benefit a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit organization, the Ozone Hole Inc.
