Greenpeace Targets Logging Ships

Greenpeace activists halted the loading of a logging ship in Papua New Guinea as the government battles an illegal logging corruption scandal, Reuters reports. Four Greenpeace activists climbed up a loading crane on the logging ship Harbour Gemini at Paia Inlet, in Papua New Guinea’s southwest Gulf Province, and unfurled a yellow banner reading “Protect Forests, Save Our Climate,” a Greenpeace spokesman said. The activists boarded the ship as barges carried cut logs to the vessel, moored beside a forest-logging concession owned by Malaysian firm Rimbunan Hijau through a PNG subsidiary.
