Allen Press is the latest Lawrence business to buy green tags from Zephyr Energy, a partnership of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Lawrence’s Bowersock Mills & Power Co, Lawrence Journal-World & News reports.

Sarah Hill-Nelson, Bowersock’s owner told the newspaper that buying green tags is like buying “locally grown produce,” because customers are paying a little bit more to support clean local power.

So far Allen Press is committed to offsetting 25 percent of its non-production energy use with renewable energy certificates, but is aiming to eventually offset 100 percent of energy use.

Dan Hughes, owner of Sunflower Outdoor & Bike, told the newspaper that he offsets 100 percent of the energy costs for his store.

Zephyr Energy currently has nearly 40 clients, including the city of Lawrence.

It’s not just local businesses that are purchasing RECs, the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare, the US Open, and Tacoma Power are just a few corporations that are also offsetting their electricity consumption with RECs.
