In order to cut costs,Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire is trying out four-day workweeks for a few hundred state employees and implementing energy savings measures,  AP reports.

The shorter workweek will be tried for everyone at the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, and the Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises. Selected offices at seven other agencies will also take part in the initiative.

Gregoire also told officials to cut gas consumption by 5 percent below 2007 levels

Details about the four 10-hour days will be worked out in a meeting next week. The shorter workweek will eventually involve about 650 state workers who use about 260,000 square feet of building space.

The state is not the first to try out a four-day workweek, cities in Sudbury, Winchester, Concord, and Utah are also experimenting with shorter workweeks.
