Amtrak Transit Center Installs Solar System with Hybrid Charging Station

amtrack_nj_transit_center.jpgTrenton Amtrak New Jersey Transit Center announced that it has completed the first of two solar rooftop systems with hybrid charging stations. The 201 kilowatt solar canopy has been installed on the rooftops of parking garages on each side of the transit center.

The dual-purpose “solar canopy” systems is expected to provide, on a combined basis, about 467,500 kilowatt hours per year, and eliminate about 141 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

In addition to producing clean energy for each of the parking structures, each solar array is being equipped with 110v charging stations for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles.

The charging stations will utilize solar energy to directly recharge car batteries, with excess power sold back to the grid.

The solar system includes more than 600 solar panels and was installed by Premier Power Renewable Energy Inc. Nexus Properties Inc. will operate the system.

Last year, Amtrak launched a program that lets passengers offset the carbon emissions footprint generated by their train travel.
