Smith Dairy Products’ president, Steve Schmid, told the Plain Dealer that the company’s goal is to have as light an effect on the earth as possible.
Schmid says the move to greener operations will save money and makes business sense. “We’re saving money by paring down on our delivery routes and having our trucks spend less time parked but running their engines, and minimizing waste in our manufacturing plants. All that helps the bottom line.”
The company works to cut fuel and plastic consumption; they have also installed computers onboard vehicles to track the miles driven, amount and destination of product delivered and the time a truck sits idling.
CattleNetwork recently reported that dairy’s carbon foot print has dropped to 12 pounds per gallon in 2007, from 31 pounds in 1944.
In September, Dairy UK reported that some UK farmers have put their cows on a special diet in order to reduce GHG emissions.
