Global Recycling Standard Issued for Textiles and Clothing

fabric.jpgControl Union Certifications has launched the first Global Recycling Standard (GRS) for textiles and clothing to ensure greater sourcing clarity right through the production supply chain, EcoTextile News reports.

The Control Union Certifications have launched Global Recycling Standard (GRS) for textiles and clothing. The new GRS is a three-tiered system with the Gold standard requiring products to contain between 95 percent to 100 percent recycled material; the Silver standard requires products to be made of between 70 percent to 95 percent recycled product; and the Bronze standard requires products to have a minimum of 30 percent recycled content.

Mark Prosé of Control Union Certifications told Ecotextile News that, “the launch of the Global Recycled Standard is in response to an increasing desire from the textile industry to back up claims that can be made regarding recycled products.”

Recycled materials in textiles will be based on criteria already laid down by Scientific Certification Systems.

In June, members of the Outdoor Industry Association, Eco Working Group met to develop a framework for a “manufacturing index” which the association says will help the apparel, footwear and outdoor equipment industry measure its environmental impact.
