The London 2012 Organizing Committee published the first edition of an online “Sustainable Sourcing Code” (PDF). The code is an effort to ensure the products and services used for the Olympics are responsibly sourced and minimize environmental impact during the manufacturing process.
Potential products will be assessed based on where they come from, who made them, what they’re made of, what they are wrapped in and what will happen to them after the Games.
The code was developed over a period of 18 months and organizers consulted with retailers and organizations including the Trades Union Congress, Playfair Alliance, the Ethical Trading Initiative, WWF, Fairtrade Foundation and UNICEF.
Last year, the committee outlined its sustainability plans for the 2012 Olympic Games. London 2012’s Olympic Delivery Authority is also planning a wind turbine in the Olympic Park to provide renewable energy for the 2012 Games.
