In 2008, Wausau Paper Corp. received a grant of about $343,000 from Focus on Energy to launch energy-saving efforts at its mills in Wisconsin. As a result, the company says it will save about $1 million on its annual utility bills, NewsoftheNorth.Net reports.
The initiatives are expected to save the company more than 3.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 970,000 terms of natural gas per year – enough energy to power 1,370 homes.
In 2007, Wausau Paper released a brochure, “Imprinting Your Vision for Sustainability on Paper,” which explores how environmental partnerships can further advance sustainable business practices.
Over in Iowa, Roquette America also received a check for its energy-efficient efforts. The company received a rebate of almost $99,000 from Interstate Power & Light Company, an Alliant Energy company, reported the Daily Gate City.
In early 2008, the company installed a variable frequency drive as part of its new circulating fluidized bed coal boiler. The installation is expected to reduce electricity usage by more than 5 million kilowatt hours annually and avoid more than 3,600 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. In addition, the company is expected to save $204,000 on its annual energy bill.
