Regency Centers Monitors Irrigation, Conserves H20

regencycenters.jpgTo conserve water, Regency Centers, a grocery-anchored shopping center chain, has teamed up with HydroPoint Data Systems. The company will save 42 million gallons of water annually by using the WeatherTRAK Smart Water Management System to monitor weather data and closely control outdoor irrigation, according to the companies.

How it works: WeatherTRAK uses data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to schedule watering based on the landscape’s current needs. Once installed, the system won’t need to be adjusted manually.

Water runoff waste will be cut by 71 percent, and they expect to save up to 59% in water costs. The systems will pay for themselves in just two years, according to HydroPoint’s Chris Spain.

Regency Centers will be installing WeatherTRAK systems in 30 existing shopping centers located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. This is part of the company’s greengenuity initiative, which will focus on other sustainability strategies to help the company and their tenants save money.
