white-castle-logo.jpgOver the next few weeks, White Castle restaurants in over 400 locations will go green with their packaging. Instead of white sacks, customers will notice that their food comes in a brown paper bag bearing a “recycle” logo. White Castle will also be using recycled materials for its corrugated Crave Cases.

This isn’t the first step the company has taken to be more environmentally-friendly. Since the 1960s, they’ve been recycling the bun containers they use for shipping. Since 1992, White Castle has also be using green building products, like Duro-Last, an ENERGY STAR roofing product that makes the entire restaurant more energy-efficient. Other green measures they have taken include the following:

  • 55 restaurants used LED lighting, reducing CO2 emissions by 948 tons per year.
  • They recycle over 1200 pounds of plastic every year.
  • White Castle’s frozen sandwiches are already packaged in recycled cardboard.

In the future, White Castle has plans to use even more green building materials and start a storm water bioretention program.

In recent years, many fast food companies have committed to making greener choices. Earlier this month, McDonald’s began to use a more efficient energy system, and – along with Subway, Chipotle, and Dunkin’ Donuts – they’ve been given LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
