After a nine-month study of greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Bordeaux wine industry, from grape growing to worldwide shipping, the Bordeaux Wine Trade Board (CIVB) plans to reduce carbon emissions by 20 percent before 2020, reported Wine Spectator.
The study indicated that the Bordeaux wine industry produces about 203,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, with the majority of the carbon emissions linked to the fabrication and transportation of bottles and cardboard boxes, as well as the fuel used by tractors in the vineyards.
The CIVB has outlined recommendations to reduce those emissions by 20 percent before 2020, focusing equally on energy conservation and water savings. The CIVB hopes to increase maritime shipping, which generates 5.5 percent less CO2 than ground transportation. However, neither incentives nor penalties have been established, said Wine Spectator.
